Krampus WIP

Ended up working on this longer than I thought I would. I like how it's coming out, although I'm unsure about whether i want to go back and paint the fur like I would hair, or keep using my grass brush. Still need to fix the hair.

WIP is WIP I guess.

Krampus

Jon at http://artorder.blogspot.com/ is holding the last challenge of the year and I thought I'd enter.

This is the head of Krampus, hopefully I'll think of a nice composition to go with it.

Aluka

Drawing on the tablet vs traditional media is like night and day for me. In traditional media I like to draw fast and enjoy a bit of sloppy texture; drawing with a tablet is such an elaborate exercise in becoming a perfectionist. Painting is lovely on the tablet though so yea. Enjoy

Fawn Sketch

I'm Procrastinating for an assignment by sketching, this is the only one I liked, perhaps I'll paint it later.

I'm painting Odin atm. Working on an older feel for this painting. Here's the face.

Here's a quick glance at my current piece the only detail i've done atm is the face so that's the glance. I'll have to see how the sketch ends up before I paint it but I think this will end nicely. I need to start working faster.

So I've been busy wasting time playing way too much of Borderlands since it came out. I finally got away from it enough to try a new more cartoony style. To be honest I'll probably just render this in my usual style after changing the face later. But I feel I did well enough with the post and showing of the style in general.

I'm becoming a fan of painting low resolution portraits.

So I basically made a terrible sketch (I mean really bad) and then painted over it, thank god I'm a better painter than I am a tablet sketcher. I really like the results so far. Here's a little preview now that I've finished the face. I've still got to detail the hair, and I've just completely hid the body for this because it was still the bad sketch. But overall I really like how this piece is turning out.

The Hurakan Challenge -Step 1

So I've finally got a nice rythm going with school so I found time to work on the the new challenge at art order. http://artorder.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-challenge.html

The challenge requests silhouettes of the Mayan God Hurakan. I did a few silhouettes in Alchemy that I liked as well as a few that weren't so worthy.

I think that the first two come off well as silhouettes but that the last one lost a lot of depth when i blocked in the body. These two links show the reverse silhouette that existed in the body before i had to block it in and imo offer a much better preview of my intent: ONE ---- TWO

I enjoyed one silhouette that I ended up scrapping for this particular concept which can be seen here: THREE

Lastly I'd also like to showcase another version of the first silhouette that explains the mumbo-jumbo of that snake tail: FOUR

I definitely enjoyed working with silhouettes only and it's probably something I should do a lot more when working. Silly ADD making me want to rush and freeform my way through things.

More and more

I've switched classes to be in the same class as a friend of mine. My new class is called Evolution: Genes to Genomes. I also spent most of yesterday painting a sketch from my 3e DND adventure which I ran. Receive Bacon:

A new semester

I start a new semester at UMBC this fall. I only need 3 more classes to graduates (well 2 and a lab) but since the lab and it's accompaniment are only offered in the spring I will have to wait until next year to graduate with my Bachelor's. It'll be nice to have that complete at last as it will add clout to my resume. My class this semester is Biol 430: Biological Chemistry; it takes place at 8 AM on Monday Wednesday and Friday and I'm definitely somewhat excited for it (or maybe just anxious).

In other news I've just moved this week and I'm planning to apply for an Art Internship at Big Huge Games. I REALLY hope they'll have me, I can't express how much I want to work there. I've looked all over the web at different gaming sites, and in my opinion they have the best presentation for a prospective artist out there. Not only do they provide what sort of qualifications are expected but they have a segment that offers information on what sort of tasks to perform to prepare yourself for the gaming industry. Beyond that their 'Beard Competition' really amused me.

Here's another hand drawn treat from my time in Georgia.

Sunday, August 16, 2009

I've been purposely avoiding drawing outside of a digital medium for a few months now in order to force myself to improve my painting skills. But for the last few weeks I've been in Georgia helping out some family and thus lost access to my digital capability.

Well an artist has to work. I was really pleased with the sketches I worked together. I mostly had a twisted Rats of Nihm meets Alice in Wonderland Story running through my head while drawing.

I'll scan the rest in later I imagine.
